My grandfather, the late Clifton McCoy, had a lot of special qualities about him. One of the most unique qualities he had was his rare blood type-- type AB negative. It's estimated that only .045% of the world's population has this blood type. I remember staying overnight with my grandparents when I was small and hearing the phone ring in the middle of the night. My grandfather always knew who it was--the hospital. They desperately needed blood and would beg him to drive the 20 minute drive to donate his blood. How could he say no to that? Inevitably, he would get up and drive to the hospital to give his blood. Sometimes he'd get two or three calls a month. He didn't get paid. He just did it because that's the kind of man he was. The lessons I learned from watching him give unselfishly of himself have stayed with me throughout the years.
